Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers can predict post-op delirium

July 11, 2022

We now have a way to predict individuals that will present with postoperative delirium, which is a well established complication in older patients and we now have more knowledge on how this delirium occurs.

Interestingly, the study published in Annals of Surgery by a group from the Massachusetts General Hospital, shows that two biomarkers identified in blood of the patients with Alzheimer's disease are important in predicting post-operative delirium. Clinical studies have shown that there is an association between the two conditions, namely delirium and Alzheimer's disease.
