Exercise Shown to Prevent Colon Cancer Recurrence, Study Finds

June 02, 2025

CHICAGO — A recent study reveals that a structured exercise program can significantly lower the risk of colorectal cancer returning after surgery and chemotherapy.

Experts noted that the positive impact of this exercise regimen rivals the effects typically seen with new cancer drugs. What makes this finding particularly compelling is that it comes from a randomized controlled trial (RCT), considered the gold standard in medical research. While RCTs are common in testing pharmaceuticals, they are rare and challenging to conduct for exercise interventions, making this study especially noteworthy.

The research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was also highlighted at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. This breakthrough offers a promising, non-pharmaceutical option to support colorectal cancer survivors in reducing the risk of recurrence and improving long-term outcomes.
